PETER THOEGERSEN - Soliloquy in Monopolymicrotonalism

from Sounds Exposed, Minds Without Frontiers (GCSA 27) by Various Artists

/

about

In Peter’s words: «This is a 6 percussion instruments overlay featuring tubular bells, marimba, keyboards and vibraphone, with radically altered attacks in 12, 13, 21, 36, and 159 tet, and is largely ultra-chromatic voice leading In 159tet bells and vibraphone, and 12tet marimba, all punched with bass drum. The 12tet melody is the same mapping as for the rest of the tunings and therefore the tessitura is of smaller range, due to compression of intervallic structures.»

The North-American composer Peter Thoegersen is, by far, the most radical contemporary microtonalist I’ve had the chance to meet. He embraced computerized music as much as human performance in order to give his wild ideas the necessary freedom from Phytagorean’s paradigms on tuning and intervallic system. His theories on polymicrotonalism and complex rhythms are an affirmation to a path that is innevitable, but of a lone ranger such as himself. «Soliloquy» is, like Nancarrow’s pieces, not exactly designed for human performance, but a percussive piece that’s complex in its construction but not without tragicomic humor in its feel.
