In Mat’s words: «A Fool And His Software was recorded in 2011 using Finale Notepad - the low end notation software of the Finale family. After a few years of wanting to write some music that explored rhythms and harmonies that were potentially beyond human playing this was the first piece in a series that ignored functionality and the physical limits of the instruments (piano and drums). It features sections of improvisation and highly structured writing, meshed together to create an atmosphere that is carnivalesque and free.»

The Australian composer Mat Ward’s output is diverse and difficult to summarize in few words. But it’s plain to see that Ward’s a real eclectic adventurer and imaginative musician, who doesn’t care about boundaries of sound exploration, which is something quite interesting. He can be either serious and/or funny in his experimentation. A listener can notice both Conlon Nancarrow and Frank Zappa’s influences in this curious piece, «A Fool With His Software». The title betrays a false modesty, but it’s clearly a parody on music scores in a computer, in which the composer’s mind is more seduced to the ideas onto score than the possibility of real human playing, unaware of any possible disasters.
