HERVÉ PÉREZ - Buxton Devonshire Dome (February 1st, 2013)

about

In Hervé’s words: «This track was recorded inside Buxton Devonshire dome, an incredible structure with amazing acoustics. The recording demonstrates some of the acoustic phenomena, and combine both reverberation and delays, as the recorder is situated in the middle of the space. The curved shape of the dome also gives the incredible ‘whispering wall’ effect when small sounds can be heard across the wide space.
It was a unique opportunity to record and play in this space. This was the first outing of the year 2013 for the project ‘sounding out’. This series of recordings explores the acoustics and interacts with the atmosphere of a particular place. Architecture and natural topography are featured with a special interest in locations with a spiritual quality. This is what drives and inspires the music; reflections on the spirit of space, the practice of deep listening. These meditations narrate the stories whispered by the place itself and the music produced is only an expression of this experience. These are not studio recordings and as such are not perfect; they present the soundscape in and around the places as it happens, and include every sound that constitutes the moment.

The piece recorded in Buxton places amongst the dense sonic property of the dome a sense of stillness. This is an interplay between overtones, beat frequencies and the acoustic events bouncing around the space. The extended techniques, specific to the soprano saxophone, slowly evolve as a near static melody that comes out of the breath and demonstrate gentle and fragile multiphonics.»

Hervé Pérez, in my opinion, is a unique researcher. He’s a real innovative sax player who managed to explore the acoustic potential of his instrument by playing it favoring natural acoustic resonances. And the high-pitched sound of this recording turned the soprano saxophone into something beyond the very expectations of this instrument. A great achievement.
