Textos por George Christian/Texts by George Christian:

Some Instrumental Pieces for Guitar & Other Instruments” is an album that intends two aims: first, to be a compilation of instrumental works I made between the years 2010 and 2011, in these sporadic recordings (but with a lot of intensity) and second, to be my very first album released by a Brazilian net-label, Boolean Records, after three albums released on foreign labels, “Às Vezes Sempre” (Stomoxine Records, 2010), “Prelúdio Tardio” (Deep White Sound, 2011) , “Three Dimensions of Unrecognizement and Other Unknown Reaches” (Itsu Jitsu, 2011). It is particularly important to me given the fact that this is my first album totally Brazilian, because it is a (inter)national release and it has elements of music that could only be, first of all, Brazilians in its repertoire – although, in the essence, my music aims at universality.

It is symbolically a new musical beginning. It begins where the first album started: my guitar. The cover photo was taken on the same day of the photo that illustrated “Às Vezes Sempre”. Listeners who follow my work since my early days also will notice the technical maturity, both in recording and instrumental execution in the effort. The album’s music is a mix of improvisation and composition coexisting in the same room – and, at the bottom, everything is a means to make music. The pieces were carefully designed so that the spontaneous creativity was under beacons of purpose in its compositional strength. And the guitar pieces use tunings different from each other, giving a distinct flavor to the album in its entirety.

It’s an album especially Brazilian also because of the participation of the São Paulo’s musician Bruno Carrasco (bruno nobru). And he works with me in two numbers: “se fazendo em corpo” (“making itself into body”, whose original idea is his) and “noites telegráficas” (“telegraphic nights”, my original creation). They are two different amalgams. Bruno brought his extensive experience with experimental music in both recordings, but using a distinctly Brazilian instrument: the viola caipira. It is played in its simplicity and straightforward sound, without many devices, in the first number and resonates with layers of delay in the second one. They are two different extremes, and an important bridge for the album, from pure expression to the myriad of acoustic layers.

I am particularly happy to have partnerships in Brazil, even though set in different states of the country. I’m part of a historical moment in which being Brazilian or from any other country matters under a certain degree and it is very important when it comes to making music – instrumental, mostly. We are in a condition of political globalization. Some of these pieces’ titles and the title of this album may be between the English and Portuguese – because of the sound forces of both languages - but they all bear the mark of the ineffable sound as a primary language. This album bears the mark of conceptual disengagement from its title, which infer to its own set. Even though the overall sound brings the sound mixing and assimilation of foreign information on each piece, so spontaneously created and conceived without any forcing semiotic compromise of a more constructed order, its final condition of gipsy anarchy and bird’s liberty; being of the world than being patriotic. Anyway, here is a invitation for the listener to venture in these humble pieces.
